Hangar 3 was constructed from 1942-1943. In 1988, the hangar was formally determined individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for its association with events during World War II and for its engineering and design. In 1994, Hangar 3 was listed as a contributor to the National Register-designated NAS Sunnyvale Historic District.

Hangar 3 Hazard Remediation Project Commenced February 2024

In 2019 it was determined that this major landmark could not be conserved. Detailed plans were implemented to document its history and features.
