The Blue Angels
For many Peninsula
residents, the
activities at
Moffett Field
and NASA/Ames
have been something
of a mystery.
One aspect of
Moffett life that
was never a secret
was the regular
visit of the Blue
Angels during
the base's annual
air show, traditionally
held around July
4th.
The Blue Angels,
founded in 1946
by Admiral Chester
Nimitz, flew at
exhibitions and
air shows all
over the country
during times of
peace.
The Navy's elite
flyers would travel
at 600 miles per
hour, at times
with wings three
feet apart.
On October 17
and 18, 1992,
more than 500,000
people flocked
to the base to
observe Moffett
Field's "Last
Air Show" and
witness the speed
and synchronized
aerobatics of
the Navy's flight
demonstration
team. It was the
Blue Angels' final
performance at
Naval Air Station
Moffett Field.
